Shouts and Murmurs - February 13, 2024

Is The Hills Of California as good as Jerusalem? Is anyone going to tell Ralph Fiennes he is wrong? Can we all calm down a bit about the Royal Court?

Hello, and welcome to Shouts And Murmurs, a weekly email for paid supporters of The Crush Bar, written by me, Fergus Morgan.

Every week, I round up the best - and worst - theatre writing elsewhere, from reviews, to interviews, to features, to opinions, as well as any other fun or interesting theatre-related stuff I come across. It will mostly be UK-based, but I’ll keep an eye on international stuff, too.

I was on holiday last week, so this week’s extra-long edition looks back over the last fortnight. There is a bit on the Royal Court’s literary department and the misplaced anger surrounding erroneous rumours of its axing; a round-up of the reviews of The Hills Of California, Till The Stars Come Down, Blue Beard and more; links to interviews with Andrew Scott, Marisha Wallace, David Greig, Milo Rau and more; plus a few more bits and bobs worth reading.
